Major-General Robert Clive, 1st Baron Clive

“Clive of India”

Clive is one of the most controversial characters in British Military History. Reputedly bad tempered and fearless he had establish a protection racket in his home county of Shropshire whilst still a teenager. Employed by the East India Company, he had no formal military training but managed to subjugate much of the Indian sub-continent for his employers whilst also driving other nations (notably France) out of the sub-continent. His actions created much wealth for his employers and for himself and (together with Warren Hastings) laid the foundations for the British Raj.
