Field Marshal Edmund Allenby, 1st Viscount Allenby

Allenby was a veteran of the Boer War and had, perhaps, the surprising reputation for a First World War Commander of being a soldier’s soldier.  Initially he led the British Cavalry Division in France before commanding the British Army at the Second Battle of Ypres.  He disagreed consistently with other Commanders on the Western Front particularly Haig, before being posted to command British Forces in the Middle East where he successfully captured Palestine and other territories from the Turks. Also know for his skillful handling of Lawrence of Arabia.
